DPR resident sentenced to 11 years for spying for Ukraine – Supreme Court



Donetsk, Aug 20 – DAN. A Donetsk People’s Republic resident has been sentenced to 11 years for spying for Ukraine’s security service, the DPR Supreme Court press service reported on Thursday.

“The DPR Supreme Court Appeals Chamber considered the criminal case against Ukrainian citizen M., which had been investigated by the Republic’s State Security Ministry,” the report said. “The defendant had been charged under DPR Criminal Code Articles 321 and Article 29 Part 3.”

The suspect, recruited by agents of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), engaged in espionage in the DPR territory from August 2017 till March 2019. As a DPR-based company director he made regular visits to Ukraine-held areas. During one of such trips, an SBU officer warned him at a checkpoint that next time he would be allowed to cross the border only if he agreed to cooperate, the press service said.

The Ukrainian secret service then gave him assignments to take video recordings of the Donetsk-Gorlovka trunk road and watch DPR police and forensic service administration buildings and the Hotel Prague. He sent his videos using the WhatsApp application.

“During the hearing, M.pleaded guilty to the charges under DPR Criminal Code Article 321 and Article 29 Part 3. Besides M.’s admission of guilt, his offences were fully proven with the evidence examined by the court,” the Supreme Court said.



The defendant was sentenced to 11 years in a maximum security penitentiary.*jk
