UN Mission Head violates impartiality principle, supports Ukrainian prosecutors – Morozova

Donetsk, Aug 20 – DAN. Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine Matilda Bogner’s support to criminal proceedings against Donetsk People’s Republic politicians and activists undermines confidence in the Mission, DPR ombudswoman Darya Morozova said on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Ukraine’s chief military prosecutor Anatoly Matios announced that Kiev suspected a number of DPR politicians and activists of unlawful activities such as gathering evidence on Ukraine’s war crimes in Donbass. The list of suspects includes Morozova and DPR Foreign Minister Natalia Nikonorova. Bogner supported Matios at his press conference.

“In her statement, Mrs Bogner approved Ukrainian military prosecutors’ actions. She did not take into account the influence of the fact of her presence and comments she made in the course of the press conference, as the expression of support to illegal actions by one of the parties to the conflict. The above is a gross violation of professional ethics, and undermines confidence in the impartiality and independence of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission,” Morozova said.

Bogner, who took over the UN Mission in July, is dismantling the relations with the People’s Republic which her predecessor Fiona Frazer had taken a long time to build, she said.

“We insist that the United Nations Organisation duly assess Mrs Bogner’s actions and confirm the impartiality and independence in executing the mandate of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in connection with the conflict in Donbass,” the ombudswoman said.

Morozova added that she had not been officially notified about the institution of criminal proceedings in accordance with Ukraine’s Criminal Procedure Code.*jk
